Three In A Row For Ericsson 4 In Thrilling Leg Eight Finish

Ericsson 4 has done it again.  In a thrilling finish to leg eight of the Volvo Ocean Race from Galway to Marstrand, Sweden, Ericsson 4 pulled out all the stops to take a third leg win in a row.  PUMA finished second and, after a heroic effort from the crew, Green Dragon clung on to third place, to complete the same order of finish as for leg seven.

Leg Eight Day 5 Daily Story: Sleepless and Shattered

It has been a tough 24 hours for the seven boats in the Volvo Ocean Race as they enter the final stages of leg eight from Galway to Marstrand.  Ericsson 4 still has a tenuous lead over Green Dragon (+2 nm)  and the pair are match racing up the Danish coast, less than a mile off the beach of Thyborøn, a fishing village in Jutland, famous for being the site of numerous shipwrecks.

Leg Eight Day 4 Daily Story: Downwind Dash To Marstrand

There is a lot to be happy about in the Ericsson camp today.  Ericsson 4 got the better side of a big wind shift, which propelled her up the order to take over first position in leg eight of the Volvo Ocean Race, while Ericsson 3 recorded the fastest time in the ‘Rotterdam Gate Race’.

Leg Eight Day 3 Daily Story: English Channel Challenges Volvo Ocean Race Fleet

Green Dragon Blazes Out Of Galway In Volvo Ocean Race Leg Eight Start

Hometown boat, Green Dragon, made a fantastic start today as the Volvo Ocean Race fleet left Galway Bay on the 1250 nm sprint leg to Marstrand in Sweden.  It was a great reward for the huge crowds of well-wishers, who filled every available space in Galway in order to cheer their home team on.

Volvo Ocean Race Fleet Ready For The Sprint To Sweden

The seven-strong Volvo Ocean Race fleet is ready to race to Sweden, leaving behind a Galway stopover that has exceeded all expectations. With visitor numbers through the race village now nearing 350,000 and climbing to well over half a million when the crowds along the sea wall for the in-port race weekend are factored in, Galway has demonstrated genuine enthusiasm and passion for the race.

First Win For Puma In Galway In-Port Race

PUMA won the in-port race series in Galway today after two thrilling races were held on Galway Bay.  This is the first time that PUMA has been on top of the podium for the Volvo Ocean Race and it brings her closer to second place in the overall standings.  Telefónica Blue, second today, maintains second place overall, but only by one point and Ericsson 4’s slightly disappointing performance shaves her overall lead from 14.5 points to 13 points.

In-Port Race On Galway Bay Promises To Be Spectacular

The sixth in-port race day of the Volvo Ocean Race is scheduled for Saturday afternoon on Galway Bay and it promises to be among the more memorable events of the 2008-09 race. If the welcome the fleet received last weekend at the conclusion of the leg from Boston is any indication, the local crowds will be large, loud, and very enthusiastic.
