Media Results Published Today Reveal Substantial Increase For Volvo Ocean Race

Portsmouth, England – 11 November 2009 – media statistics published today for the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 show a huge increase over the 2005-06 event.  The race is in tune with the new media age, and in 2008-09, plenty of high quality content was streamed to websites and mobile handsets.  The new addition of each boat carrying a Media Crew Member, who was a dedicated reporter equipped with the latest technology in High Definition filming and satellite communication, has also proved to be a big step forward.  Read more…

Volvo Open 70 Rule and Notice of Race Revealed

The new look Volvo Open 70 Rule, published today along with the Notice of Race, confirm changes set to enhance the fleet racing in the 11th Volvo Ocean Race, which will start from its new home base of Alicante in Spain in the autumn of 2011. The changes come as a result of extensive analysis carried out over the past 12 months by the Rule Management Group led by technical expert Ken McAlpine (Volvo Open 70 Rule) and rules expert Bill Edgerton (Notice of Race) in consultation with previous competitors.

Italian Entry for Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12

Italy is back in the world’s premier ocean race for the first time since Brooksfield entered the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1993-94.  Italy’s Giovanni Soldini (43) has been named as the skipper of the Italia 70 team, which will race under the Italian flag with a fully Italian crew.  Soldini has completed two single handed round the world races, and has made over 30 Atlantic crossings.

Ericsson 4 wins the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 – PUMA Take Leg Nine

A third place finish in leg nine has been enough for Ericsson 4 to provisionally win the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09.  The team now has a 13-point lead over PUMA, with just 12 points available in the rest of the race.

Further Rule Changes for 2011 Volvo Ocean Race

With 62,000 people in the race village and nearly 60,000 more taking in the racing from the sea wall between Salthill and Barna, along the Northern shores of Galway Bay, Saturday’s in-port Race in Galway was a great success. On Sunday morning the Volvo Ocean Race looked again to the future and particularly the next race, which is due to start in 2011.
