Ericsson 3 Leg Ten Day 2 QFB: received 26.06.09 1535 GMT
Friday, June 26th, 2009Today “Life at the Extreme” got yet another meaning. We are getting closer to the finish and it’s not the weather, winds, waves or speed that are extreme. Not even the environment surrounding us is something I would raise my eyebrows for. But, a look in the sea chart does… It even makes me nervous. Not the least after I heard about our navigator Aksel Magdahl’s experiences from the area.

Friday, June 26th, 2009It is not only Magnus Olsson who is tired on Ericsson 3. It feels like everyone is taking every opportunity they can to get some sleep. We are running a standby watch system with three hours off and six hours on, but if there is not much happening some of the guys can go to sleep during the watch.

Friday, June 26th, 2009Before PUMA tacked, they went closer to shore than any other boat. A couple of minutes ago we concluded that that was not the perfect move. We met them on port tack and from being behind, we were now a couple of hundred metres ahead, we now just had to duck them.

Thursday, June 25th, 2009Attacked by flyfish, surfs in 39 knots, storms, close to sinking and then winning the longest leg in history, 12,500 mile from China to Rio. The story of Ericsson 3 will not be forgotten, that I know for sure after a very nice stopover in Stockholm.

Monday, June 15th, 2009We have been side by side with Puma for the last hours. At one point only 50-100 metres apart. It is very tricky to overtake a boat when reaching, they can pretty easy close the gate on you.

Monday, June 15th, 2009It is a bit hysterical now. We have been chasing Puma almost since the start and the last hours we have been very close while Ericsson 4 has lost a lot and are still a couple of miles behind and down to leeward.

Monday, June 15th, 2009It’s a fantastic morning out here. We are steadily logging 20 to 25 knots of boatspeed, the sea is not to bumpy and now we have only around 400 metres to Puma pointing straight forward from our bow. Ericsson 4 is about a mile up to windward and a bit ahead.

Monday, June 15th, 2009”I was just about to fall asleep behind the wheel”, Richard Mason says and put his head on the hatch when he comes up from emptying the water in the ballast tanks.
