The Longest Leg in History

Five Volvo Ocean Race teams are girding themselves for the longest leg in the history of the race – a 12,300 nautical mile marathon to from Qingdao, China to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The leg starts at 1300 local time (0500 GMT) from a start line positioned just off the Olympic breakwater in Qingdao and will take the fleet into the depths of the iconic Southern Ocean and around Cape Horn before the teams find the relief of the finish line in the tropical conditions of Rio de Janeiro.

Ericsson 4 Extends Lead In Volvo Ocean Race

Even in the light and shifty breeze off Qingdao in China today, it was all on for the four Volvo Open 70s as they raced in the third of the in-port race series of the Volvo Ocean Race.  Today’s racing was an exciting blend of lead changes and close match racing, with Ericsson 4 (Torben Grael/BRA) finally topping the leaderboard after two races.

Volvo Ocean Race Takes In-Port Racing To An Olympic Scale

The third in-port race day of the Volvo Ocean Race will feature just four entrants, but will be hotly contested nonetheless. Taking place on the same waters where the Olympic sailing was conducted last August, Saturday’s competition features the top four teams on the overall race leaderboard.

Green Dragon Arrives In Home Port Of Qingdao After A Battering En Route

Unbelievable Effort As Puma Finish Finishes Second On Leg Four

Kenny Read/USA, guided PUMA through the finish of Volvo Ocean Race leg four in Qingdao, China today at 0817 GMT (1617 local time) to claim second place after an unbelievable effort, which saw the team break their boom and drop anchor in the Philippines order to make repairs.

Pressure Is On As Ericsson 4 and Puma Lead At Start Of Volvo Ocean Race Leg Four

The Volvo Ocean Race returned to the race track today in Singapore when the gun fired signifying the start of the 2,500 nautical mile leg to Qingdao in China, the leg most crews consider will be one of the most difficult and brutal legs of the race.  Never in this history of the race has there been a leg like this, where the fleet will be sailing upwind for such an extensive distance.  The difference between racing and surviving is taken very seriously and all skippers are predicting the need to ease back when conditions worsen.

Cold and Dangerous Waters Ahead

Leg four of the Volvo Ocean Race, from Singapore to Qingdao (2,500 nm), promises to be among the hardest sections of this edition of the race. Before the finish in China, the crews are expected to encounter difficult upwind conditions, freezing temperatures, and boat-breaking sea states caused by strong winds battling fierce currents.

Extreme 40s to feature at Volvo Ocean Race stopovers

Portsmouth (England) 15 July, 2008 – The Extreme 40 Series will be part of the on-the-water entertainment package at selected stopovers during the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09.

The Extreme 40s will feature in Alicante, Singapore, Qingdao, Boston and Stockholm with fleets of up to 10 boats.
