Telefónica backs Spanish Team in Volvo Ocean Race

Portsmouth (England) – 9 May, 2008 – At a press conference in Madrid today, it was confirmed that Spain’s two-boat assault on the Volvo Ocean Race will be backed by Telefónica, the Spanish telecommunications giant and parent company of movistar. The campaign is also supported by a raft of additional sponsors and is backed by the Valencian government and the Spanish Sailing Federation.

The campaign will again be spearheaded by Pedro Campos as CEO, while Bouwe Bekking, skipper of the Spanish entry movistar in the previous race, returns as Sports and Technical Director. Spanish Olympians, Iker Martínez and Fernando Echávarri are among the principal members of the sailing team, which will be based in the start port of Alicante.

Crew List for PUMA Ocean Racing (May 2008)

Boston, USA - 8 May  2008 – Ken Read, skipper of PUMA Ocean Racing, officially announced his crew and management for the upcoming Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009, as the team gathered for official training in Newport, Rhode Island and prepared for the christening of its new boat on May 12 in Boston Harbor. Among the crew, PUMA Ocean Racing represents six countries and has 21 past Volvo Ocean Race participations to its credit.

Welcome to the April edition of the Volvo Ocean Race newsletter. The focus this month is on people. Our new CEO, Knut Frostad, has been busy interviewing applicants for the post of new Race Director, to replace Andy Hindley who left us in early March. We are pleased to welcome, all the way from New Zealand, Jack Lloyd. 
 
Knut has also been travelling to some of the ports and negotiations are progressing well. 
 
As the race organising team begins to expand in the lead-up to the race start in October, now less than six months away, some familiar faces have returned to the fold, and some new faces have been drafted in.

New Race Director appointed for Volvo Ocean Race

Portsmouth (England) – 21 April 2008 – New Zealander Jack Lloyd, a well known figure in international yacht racing, has joined the Volvo Ocean Race as its new Race Director. Lloyd, 54, was Chairman of the International Jury for the 2005-06 race after serving as a member of the jury for two previous races.

World-class photography, image distribution and archive for Volvo Ocean Race

Portsmouth (England) – 17 April 2008 – Leading marine photographer, Rick Tomlinson has been appointed as official photographer to the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09. All images from the event starting on 4 October 2008 in Alicante, will be distributed by London’s onEdition and the whole collection will be stored on a state-of-the art system designed and built especially for the job by Brighton-based company, Bright Interactive.

About the race:

The Volvo Ocean Race was originally known as The Whitbread Round the World Race and was conceived over a pint of beer more than 30 years ago

The first race left England in September 1973 and it has run every four years since. The next Volvo Ocean Race will be the tenth edition of the event and for the first time will be held three years after the previous event.

Norway’s Knut Frostad has joined us as CEO and is now at the helm of the Volvo Ocean Race, instead of a Volvo Open 70.
